Enough time has elapsed so that everyone should have recovered by now from Philly Beer Week and be ready for the second annual Summer Ale Festival. On Saturday, July 24th from 6:30-10pm, the Philadelphia Zoo will once again host an evening of outstanding local and regional craft beers that have put Philadelphia on the map as a destination for beer-lovers across the globe.
Nineteen breweries will be in attendance – including Triumph, Victory (who will be serving Summer Love Ale!), Lancaster, Weyerbacher, and Philadelphia Brewing Co. – and food will be available from The Belgian Café, Dos Segundos, Bar Ferdinand, Brassetts Ice Cream, and 11 other local food distributors and restaurants.
In addition to enjoying these premier local brews and foods and spending time with the animals, you’ll be supporting a good cause. Funds raised from the event will be used for the Zoo’s Creatures of Habit initiative, which is designed to raise awareness about the Zoo’s conservation efforts concerning endangered species and habitats and how all of us can get involved.
Tickets are only available in advance, not at the door, so be sure to plan ahead of time. Here are your options:
* $80 VIP Tickets: Included early entrance at 6pm and a special VIP tent from 7-7:30pm
* $55 General Admission Tickets
* $25 Designated Driver Ticket: includes (2) tickets for non-alcoholic beverages (lemonade or ice tea) and access to restaurant sampling stations

Reinventing Brewerytown, one property at a time

via philly.com

Over the years, a number of developers have descended on Philadelphia's Brewerytown neighborhood, often with grandiose promises to revitalize the community.

Some progress has been made following the completion of Westrum Development Corp.'s 144-unit Brewerytown Square town home complex.

But acres of surrounding land Westrum slated for development years ago still sit undeveloped, in part due to the recent recession and still struggling economy.

Yet, thanks to MM Partners LLC, change has, indeed, come to Brewerytown.

Without making overconfident promises, the company - started by two lifelong friends who grew up together in Philadelphia - has been quietly changing the face of Brewerytown, one property at a time.
In 2001, after working in real estate in New York City, David Waxman, 34, saw an opportunity in Brewerytown.

He liked how close the area is to Center City and the ease of access to the highway, and noticed property values were reasonable - often due to blighted and abandoned properties.
Shortly after he had the idea, he contacted his friend, Jacob Roller, 32, and the pair bought up seven properties in the Brewerytown area.

"I just liked the area over here," said Waxman, noting that he was about 25 when he first bought properties in Brewerytown. "I studied urban studies in college. Who knew I'd use it in the real world? It was a little scary."

"It was sort of the classic case for real estate revitalization," recalled Roller during an interview on Friday, July 9, in MM Partners' offices at 2943 W. Girard Ave.

He said that when they bought the properties, they noticed a neighborhood full of friendly residents and families who had to deal with blighted, unused homes that could attract drug dealers and other criminal activity.

The pair set up shop and turned properties all along Girard Avenue into rehabbed, residential duplexes. One building became the company's first office building.

Soapy Smells on Girard Avenue

via Active Rain

What does Fishtown wash their hands with?

Beekman's Copa Soaps has been crafting sudsy bars on Girard Avenue in Fishtown for quite a long time. If you've ever walked past the storefront, you can smell the clean, herbal scents emanating from the building. The all natural, cold-processed soaps are made from various oils such as coconut, olive, palm, and almond - hence the name, C.O.P.A.

Soaps can be purchased online and are available in lush avocado, soothing honey oatmeal, several types of lavender, rejuvenating seaweed, and exhilarating peppermint. And that's just to name a few. We like the spicy zing of the ginger carrot. Bars range from $1.25 to $4.00. You can also pick up large quantities in boxes. Order 10 bars, and shipping is free. And the nice clean feeling of knowing where your soap comes from? That's a pure bonus.
