Insight into the new Mugshots on Girard

Brewerytown: Cafe Opens on West Girard Avenue

By Lindsay Burgess

via Temple

Four white cups brimming with hot coffee sit precariously in a teetering cardboard beverage carrier perched on a customer’s forearm. She struggles to reach for the doorknob that barely clings to its old wooden anchor. “Oh, let me get that for you!” exclaims the petite redhead sitting close to the door. “So sorry about that, this door is just so old,” she apologizes with a wide grin. The building is indeed old and full of history, and the woman who jumped to her feet to avoid a catastrophic spill of steaming coffee knows the historic space inside and out.

Her name is Angela Vendetti and she is the owner of the new Mugshots Coffeehouse and Cafe located at 29th Street and Girard Avenue. The shop opened Nov. 1 and Vendetti is at once relieved and excited about the newest addition to the Mugshots family.

Two other locations exist, one is in Manayunk and the other is in Fairmount. “To be honest, I was ready to kill someone,” she  says with a laugh. “October is the busiest month for the Fairmount store because of all of the Halloween tours happening across the street at the Eastern State Penitentiary. So opening the new Brewerytown store and hosting its grand opening party on Halloween was a bit of a nightmare,” she says with a smile and shakes her head, “but we got through it.”
Patrons sit and enjoy a cup of coffee at the new Brewerytown Mugshots.

The shop on Fairmount Avenue opened in 2004, followed by the opening of the Manayunk store two years later in August of 2006. Two more years passed and Vendetti decided to expand upon the Fairmount store, which allowed for a new kitchen as well as twice the amount of seating. “We’re pretty much running on a two-year cycle because two years after we renovated Fairmount, David Waxman and Jake Roller from MM Partners came to me and said, ‘Hey, why don’t you open up a new place in Brewerytown?’ And I initially said no, just because we were tapped out,” Vendetti explains.

In addition to the large expansion project underway in Fairmount, Mugshots had just lost a $50,000 line of credit from Citizens Bank and the business’s financial circumstances were looking fairly grim. However, a combination of grants afforded Vendetti the ability to eventually open in Brewerytown. With the help of Patricia Blakely of the Merchants Fund, Mugshots was able to update its website and in doing so, expand its catering menu. The second grant was the one that in the end made the new cafe location a possibility.

Upon entering the coffeehouse, the most notable structure is the tall, gold-arched ceiling that stretches across the front counter. “This place looked like a completely different space before the construction process began,” says Vendetti. “It had dropped ceilings and when we tore them down we were like ‘Whoa, that looks amazing!’ Then it dawned on us that lighting was going to be a bit of an issue.”
A fresh panini featuring local, seasonal produce.

The new Mugshots location has a distinct neighborhood feel to it that many chain cafes lack. Paintings crafted by local artists adorn the walls, and hand drawn chalkboards display the numerous menu items. It’s the menu in particular that adds to the distinct nature of the shop. Many of the food options are vegan, and that includes sandwiches, paninis, tofu salads and even many of the baked goods. This decision stems from Vendetti’s own past as a vegetarian, and she aspires to bring healthier food choices to a neighborhood desperately lacking those options. “I’ve always been interested in eating a vegetarian diet, which I think is ultimately more sustainable. However, my goal was never to be a destination spot for only vegetarian food, I wanted to serve the needs of the community as well.”

Adam Cottman, a local resident who lives between the Fairmount and new Brewerytown locations, appreciates the meat-free menu options. “I’ve been a vegetarian for years and the food at Mugshots is definitely the best I’ve ever gotten at a coffee shop. I live on Poplar, so I used to go to the cafe on Fairmount Avenue pretty frequently but now I’m going to have to split my time between the two.”

Sustainability is a key issue for Mugshots, but the owner doesn’t try to push a vegetarian agenda. Many items include fresh poultry and pork, and all of the meat the cafe buys is locally farmed and sustainably raised. Other items including cheese, eggs, yogurt and fresh produce originate from local farms as well, mostly from the Lancaster area. Back in 2002 when plans for the Fairmount store were materializing, fair trade roasters were hard to find. Recently, there has been a renaissance in the organic and fair trade culture, which has broadened Mugshots’ prospects. “Once the dust settles a little bit, I’d definitely like to start tasting and trying different local roasters. Back when we started, there were really only three or four local names in the business, but organic products have gained notoriety lately,” Vendetti says.

Mugshots is also part of the Independents Coffee Cooperative, which is a small group of independent coffeehouses that share information and resources from local fair trade sources. They have a dual mission that includes supporting fair trade companies as well as informing customers about issues related to sustainability.
Vegan menu items are a hit at all three cafe locations.

In addition to selling healthy, sustainable fare in her cafes, Vendetti also offers a buying club option for customers. It’s accessed through the website and allows customers to order food from the local vendors and farmers that the cafe locations buy from.  Mugshots essentially acts as a middleman in terms of the ordering process, and patrons pick the food up at the store a couple of days after their order has been placed. “[The] longtime residents on Girard have been wanting fresh food options, so I’m hoping the buying club will take off up here,” Vendetti explains.

It is clear that owning and operating the three coffeehouses is a labor of love for Vendetti, who after a long career of working corporate jobs welcomes the idea of working for herself. “Each day is different, and that’s something I’ve come to love,” she explains. “I realized a while ago that I’m not good at working for other people, and I don’t like it. Owning a business is not easy, but since owning a café is viewed as a lifestyle-oriented career, a lot of people assume it’s a laid-back, relaxing job. It isn’t.”

Despite its rapid growth, Mugshots does not appear to be losing steam. The sales for the opening week of the Brewerytown store were almost identical to that of the Fairmount location in 2004. “So far, we’re on par with Fairmount and have surpassed Manayunk. This is a great sign, I’m really excited about it,” Vendetti beams. Although the new cafe is still stretching its legs in the new neighborhood, it looks like Mugshots will do just fine in Brewerytown.

Entrepreneur Profile: Beth and Jamie Fox of FindZ

By Carolyn Wheatley
via Empowerment Group

Philadelphians are gradually becoming more and more aware of how many hidden jewels are scattered along Girard Avenue, and Findz is no exception. Just a block away from the Girard stop on the Market-Frankford Line, Findz occupies a small store with merchandise that spills out onto the street to create a mini sidewalk sale. The consignment shop houses tons of great clothing, jewelry, DVDs, books, games, shoes, toys, and other treasures, all able to be sold at much lower costs because of being bought as samples or traded in from customers.

Consignment shops have grown in popularity recently, but Findz is unique among them, because it is very much a product of the changes in its environment. Beth Fox, who co-owns the shop with her daughter Jamie, comes from a family that has been a part of Girard Avenue for decades, and has experienced its transformation. “We started across the street; my husband’s old business, Fox Electric, has been here forever. It was owned by his grandfather and started on 8th Street 75 years ago. This area has changed a lot in that time. I can’t really explain it; it used to be a bad area but now—it’s completely changed.”

Beth and Jamie know that customers appreciate their choosiness when it comes to what they will sell. “We pride ourselves on checking for spots or flaws, and we won’t sell it if the quality isn’t there.” Browsing through the store it’s easy to see their good taste in their merchandise. “When people come into the store, they’re so excited because we have designer clothing, gently worn, almost new, and new items. We also sell sample jewelry from nice stores for as little as two dollars. Our goal is to price it so that people can buy it—we don’t triple markup things like a lot of other stores do.”

For Findz, customer satisfaction comes easily but attracting new customers is by far the biggest obstacle the business faces. “Bringing in customers is tough. Once they’re here they love it, it’s just a matter of getting them here.” Beth and Jamie have tried advertising in newspapers like Metro and have recently begun to build a presence for Findz on the internet, starting with a Facebook page. Still, especially in this economy, getting the attention of potential customers is extremely difficult.

One of their plans to boost sales is to offer huge discounts on Black Friday, so make sure to visit Findz at 33 W Girard Ave, to take advantage of that. As they wait for business to pick up, Beth and Jamie will continue working hard in their shop and impressing the customers they enjoy so much. Beth says, “Having lots of customers coming in here, that’s my favorite part of the job.”

SBA hopes to match entrepreneurs with willing lenders

via philly.com

Small-business lending is down.

Pick a reason, but that won’t change the fact that lots of small firms would like to borrow money to expand or buy some new equipment right now.

So, what to do?

Well, the Philadelphia District of U.S. Small Business Administration is planning to host four “matchmaking events” this month where hopeful borrowers can pitch willing lenders. And the price seems right: free.
The first will be held next Wednesday at the Radisson Valley Forge Hotel in King of Prussia from 9 a.m. to noon.

It’s a bit of a departure for the SBA to do this. The federal agency has held matchmaking events to connect government procurement officers with potential private-sector contractors. But getting bankers and entrepreneurs in the same room?

Dave Dickson, director of the SBA’s Philadelphia District, freely admitted that he stole the idea from his New York City counterpart, who held such an event about two months ago.

It will be the business equivalent of speed dating - 10-minute pitches in a one-on-one meeting with a lender. That’s enough time to say who you are, what your business does, what you want financing for, and how much you need. It won’t be enough time for the banker to say, “You sold me. Here’s your check.”

“This is like getting on first base, so to speak,” Dickson said.

If the interests of entrepreneur and lender coincide, then a more in-depth interview would happen later, Dickson said.

Of the 44 lenders expected to participate, 33 are banks, seven are microloan lenders, and four are certified development companies. The banks range from the biggest locally (Wachovia) to the very small (Milestone Bank in Doylestown).

Rebekah Templeton Contemporary Art presents Sample 3

Live!infili, Jason Gandy, September 9-October 23
September 9th - October 23rd, 2010

Opening Reception:
Thursday, September 9th, 6-9 PM

Rebekah Templeton Contemporary Art is proud to present Live!infili!, an exhibition of
new sculptures by New York artist Jason Gandy.

For Live!infili!, Jason Gandy has installed a new grouping of sculptures created out of
wood, leather and porcelain. Each piece conceals an aperture: a porthole in the
side of a finely crafted miniature ship or a peephole through a wooden skull. The
vessels are compelling, however the true beauty of this work is in the vast,
reality-defying, inner-worlds. Gandy creates mesmerizing scenes exuding wonder,
mystery and surprise. Using a variety of energy sources, including solar, balance,
wind and live performers, Gandy generates subtle movements within his vignettes.
In many pieces, it is the viewer during the act of viewing, which tips the balance and
prompts the motion within a piece. Using different methods of perspective altering
illusions, and varying mechanics, he keeps the viewer off-balance and involved. It is
this live aspect of the work, which creates a visceral bond between the sculpture
and those experiencing it, engaging the viewer through wonder and a desire to
understand without ever revealing the true constructs of his artwork.

Live!infili! opens on Thursday, September 9, 2010 with a private view with the artist
from 6 to 9 pm. This is Jason Gandy's first solo exhibition in Philadelphia and his first
with Rebekah Templeton Contemporary Art. The exhibition closes on Saturday,
October 23, 2010.

Gallery Hours: Wednesday - Saturday, 12-6 pm

Turkish Coffee on Girard Avenue

via brownstoner
258egirard.png
By Samantha Melmed
Our inner caffeine-addicts are kind of excited about this: The gist of the cafe at 258 East Girard Avenue is apparently that it will be a hangout for the local Albanian community, replacing another cafe that existed until fairly recently on Girard Avenue. And that, in turn, apparently means that they'll be serving high-octane Turkish coffee, and lots of it. Owner Nevin Abedinaj now hopes for a 32-seat space to be open within 30 days of his Aug. 31 zoning hearing. GMAP

Dos Funny Frogs in GRID Magazine!

This month's issue of GRID features a great article with Alex Suarez about his new cleaning company, Dos Funny Frogs, located at 223 W. Girard Ave.:
via. GRID

by Lee Stabert
After only a few minutes of conversation with Dos Funny Frogs’ Alex Suarez, it becomes clear that he has the mind of a scientist—discern a problem, research, test, solve. That enthusiasm for discovering a better (and greener) way to do things propels his business, a cleaning service and cleaning product manufacturer with an environmental bent, to growing success. Last month they opened a storefront location on a bustling section of Girard Avenue in Fishtown.

Suarez immigrated from Cuba over a decade ago. He attended Bucknell College, earning a degree in molecular biology. His mother, who followed him to America a year and a half later, started cleaning houses. “She doesn’t speak English, but she’s a very hard worker,” says Suarez. “Once I finished school, I noticed that she had a few customers, and that she was making a little bit of money.” Dos Funny Frogs was born.
“I wanted the name of the business to be something very different,” he explains. “And I wanted it to be Spanglish—unique to us, yet very friendly to Americans. So, that’s where ‘dos’ comes from—dos meaning two. It’s just me and my mother.” The “Frogs” part of the name was inspired by Suarez’s passion for biology. “I think they are very, very cool animals,” he continues. “So gentle, and they are a very good example of how we are devastating the environment.”

Once he went into business with his mother, Suarez started to notice all the waste that happens in cleaning operations. “My mother was spending a tremendous amount of money for paper towels,” he explains. “Why are we using paper towels? Not only are we killing a tremendous amount of trees, but we are spending a lot of money. So we had to do a little research, and it was, in my opinion, environmentally conscious to use rags that you can wash and reuse.” He also wanted to disinfect without the use of chemicals, so they came up with the idea of boiling the rags before reuse.
Then it was onto the next challenge: Suarez was tired of using someone else’s cleaning products, so he got to work—research, test, solve. Dos Funny Frogs developed SAPOS, a hydrogen peroxide-based all-purpose cleaner scented with oil from discarded orange peels. (“I love orange. I love it. It’s like one of my things,” effuses Suarez.) Finding acceptable bottles was also a complicated task. They needed to be made in the US and composed of No. 2 plastic for recycling purposes. Suarez eventually found a suitable company in Iowa; their labels are manufactured locally using biodegradable ink. Eventually, the Fishtown storefront will house a refill station offering the cleaner at discounted rates.

In addition to the rags and the cleaner, Suarez has gone green with the company’s transportation system. To cut down on fuel costs and Frogs’ carbon footprint, employees travel en masse in the “Frog Mobile,” cleaning homes more quickly in larger teams. This eliminates the need for picking up and dropping off. The company’s website also features “The Frog Tracker,” allowing customers to remotely monitor the crew, seeing if they are en route, in progress or finished with the job.

Environmentalism informs every aspect of the business. The SAPOS label features a frog suspended in a bubble—it’s a carefully considered image. “Bubbles are very fragile,” says Suarez. “And that’s basically how everything is—life is very fragile. Today you have it and tomorrow you don’t. If we don’t take care of our everyday habits, the frogs will eventually be exterminated. Our great grandkids may never get to see a frog. I do have a real frog, by the way. She’s not here, yet. She’s at the old office. Her name’s Mango.”

Reinventing Brewerytown, one property at a time

via philly.com

Over the years, a number of developers have descended on Philadelphia's Brewerytown neighborhood, often with grandiose promises to revitalize the community.

Some progress has been made following the completion of Westrum Development Corp.'s 144-unit Brewerytown Square town home complex.

But acres of surrounding land Westrum slated for development years ago still sit undeveloped, in part due to the recent recession and still struggling economy.

Yet, thanks to MM Partners LLC, change has, indeed, come to Brewerytown.

Without making overconfident promises, the company - started by two lifelong friends who grew up together in Philadelphia - has been quietly changing the face of Brewerytown, one property at a time.
In 2001, after working in real estate in New York City, David Waxman, 34, saw an opportunity in Brewerytown.

He liked how close the area is to Center City and the ease of access to the highway, and noticed property values were reasonable - often due to blighted and abandoned properties.
Shortly after he had the idea, he contacted his friend, Jacob Roller, 32, and the pair bought up seven properties in the Brewerytown area.

"I just liked the area over here," said Waxman, noting that he was about 25 when he first bought properties in Brewerytown. "I studied urban studies in college. Who knew I'd use it in the real world? It was a little scary."

"It was sort of the classic case for real estate revitalization," recalled Roller during an interview on Friday, July 9, in MM Partners' offices at 2943 W. Girard Ave.

He said that when they bought the properties, they noticed a neighborhood full of friendly residents and families who had to deal with blighted, unused homes that could attract drug dealers and other criminal activity.

The pair set up shop and turned properties all along Girard Avenue into rehabbed, residential duplexes. One building became the company's first office building.

Soapy Smells on Girard Avenue

via Active Rain

What does Fishtown wash their hands with?

Beekman's Copa Soaps has been crafting sudsy bars on Girard Avenue in Fishtown for quite a long time. If you've ever walked past the storefront, you can smell the clean, herbal scents emanating from the building. The all natural, cold-processed soaps are made from various oils such as coconut, olive, palm, and almond - hence the name, C.O.P.A.

Soaps can be purchased online and are available in lush avocado, soothing honey oatmeal, several types of lavender, rejuvenating seaweed, and exhilarating peppermint. And that's just to name a few. We like the spicy zing of the ginger carrot. Bars range from $1.25 to $4.00. You can also pick up large quantities in boxes. Order 10 bars, and shipping is free. And the nice clean feeling of knowing where your soap comes from? That's a pure bonus.
